"Vision and hearing loss impact our ability to communicate and to safely live within our homes,” states Kerry Due, Director of Nursing at City-County Health District. The next Sheyenne Valley Memory Café will explore vision and hearing loss.
Some vision problems can’t be fixed with glasses, contact lenses, or even surgery. This is known as low vision. It can make everyday tasks such as reading or driving difficult.
“As a vision specialist, I can show you how to use technologies and magnifying devices that aid with vision loss. We often find that brighter lights can help, so I’ll share about lighting resources available through ND Vocational Rehabilitation,” states Jim Drew, Vision Specialist.
Research has linked hearing loss to the development of dementia. Often people who use hearing aids find their ability to communicate improves. Research is showing that people at an increased risk of developing dementia, such as those with diabetes and high blood pressure, benefit from hearing aids to help slow the rate of cognitive decline.
"As the Adult Outreach Specialist, I connect individuals with technology and resources to help them with their hearing loss. At the next Memory Café, I will provide you with ideas of what you can do to safely and independently live at home,” states Dawn Sauvageau, ND School for the Deaf/Resource Center.
The Sheyenne Valley Memory Café will be meet on Thursday, November 21 from 1-3 PM at The Legacy Place, 570 13th Street NE, Valley City. Please note this location change for the November memory cafe. In December, the series will resume at Faith Lutheran Church. Dawn Sauvageau, Adult Outreach Hearing Specialist with the ND School for the Deaf/Resource Center, and Jim Drew, Vision Specialist with the ND Vocational Rehabilitation, will be the guest speakers. The program starts at 1:30 PM.
The Memory Café is an opportunity for people with early onset dementia or Alzheimer’s to connect as well as their caregivers and family members.
