Supporting Good Health and High Profit

Why Healthy Concessions?
Schools are one of the centers of each of our communities.  What the school does and the environment it offers affects not only the students but all community members.

So let’s take a look at what’s happening in our communities:

  • 75% of the $3.2 trillion we spend on healthcare (2016) is spent on chronic disease (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and cancer)
  • 70% of adults are overweight or obese which increases their risk for chronic disease
  • 30% of students are overweight or obese

These statistics show why it is important that all foods and beverages used for fundraising or sold at concession stands make a positive contribution to the diet and health of all community members – students and adults alike!  Given the rising obesity and poor diets in general, we need to ensure that fundraisers and concessions set a positive example and support the health of everyone.

Wider and healthier choices will attract more sales and increase the profit at a concession stand.  Charge a little less and reduce the profit on healthier items compared to non-healthy items.

Change is hard! Identifying and initiating new options for concession stands can be a challenge, but there are many healthy alternatives that are available and can be both practical and profitable.

Hold a Healthy Concessions Expo for organizations in schools and/or the community to help them identify healthy foods to serve.
